LATIN AMERICAN FESTIVAL OF THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF WOMEN AND GIRLS IN SCIENCE

Our team was determined to encourage Women in science but also Women in iGEM!. We participated in the Latin American Festival of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science organized by Biotec Latina. The team designed and presented infographics inspired by three Ecuadorian women scientists

During one month, we talked about the scientists Virgina Cedeño, Claudia Segovia, Andrea Encalada, Eugenia del Pino, Linda Guamán, Matilde Hidalgo, Ana gabriela del Hierro, Marbel Torres, Carmen Ulloa, and María José Endara. These infographics summarize their academic background, their research in different areas and their achievements as professionals of excellence. All the infographics were updated in the official pages of the organizers, so everyone can read about the work that these visionary women are doing.

SCIENCE OUTREACH IN INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES

Therefore, we seek the means to bring our scientific knowledge closer to the indigenous communities of our country. All our activities to include indigenous communities in quality education are in accordance with the Nagoya protocol. The Nagoya Protocol promotes the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity and healthy ecosystems in a multi-sectoral manner, seeking the generation of knowledge and employment, sustainable economic development and the reduction of inequalities.

Children and adults from these communities saw this initiative of our iGEM team positively, because they are also important actors in the integral development of Ecuador. To the extent that indigenous communities have access to science and particularly to modern biotechnology, there will be greater acceptance and dissemination of their invaluable ancestral knowledge. With this exchange of information, research projects that benefit the entire population could be generated.
